Effective Treatment for Fibromyalgia Featured on Oprah Winfrey Show

"You don’t have to live with that agony!"

Chicago, Nov. 6, 2007 — On yesterday’s Oprah Winfrey Show, themed “How to Turn Back Time," New York-Presbyterian cardiothoracic surgeon Mehmet Oz, MD, offered anti-aging strategies from his new book YOU: Staying Young—The Owner’s Manual for Extending Your Warranty.

In the discussion, Dr. Oz referred to the groundbreaking work of board certified internist Jacob Teitelbaum, MD. “Dr. Teitelbaum,” he said, “is a wonderful physician who specializes in fibromyalgia, and he opened my eyes…to a problem that afflicts 8 million Americans.”

“In modern medicine, we didn’t admit that fibromyalgia exists,” Dr. Oz explained. “It turns out that not only does it exist, but we actually have solutions…And you don’t have to live with that agony that you were suffering from.”

One month ago, Dr. Oz referred Lisa D., a patient with fibromyalgia, to Dr. Teitelbaum. “I had a phone consultation with Dr. Teitelbaum, and he provided me with so many answers to questions that were previously a mystery,” she wrote in summary of her experiences. “His true desire to help was a refreshing change from the ‘dead ends’ that I had arrived at so many times before. That day I received a glimmer of hope after 7 years of headaches, muscle pain, fatigue, frustration and anxiety.”

“Our SHINE protocol, published in the Journal of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (8:2, 2001), was found to improve the quality of life for patients by an average of 75 percent at 3 months and 90 percent at 2 years, with 90 percent of the study patients improving,” he said. SHINE focuses on five vital areas of health: Sleep; Hormonal deficiencies (despite normal blood tests); Infections/Inflammation; Nutritional deficiencies; and Exercise (as able). The program has helped thousands of patients get their lives back after years of devastating pain and energy depletion.

A recent study by Dr. Teitelbaum published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine (12:9, 2006) showed that a simple 5-carbon sugar called ribose (5000 mg 3x/day) increased energy in fibromyalgia patients by an average of 45 percent after only two weeks.

“Having had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia back in 1975, which left me homeless for much of the year, I know what patients are going through,” Dr. Teitelbaum concluded. “The good news is that it is now 2007 and these illnesses have become very treatable!”
