Optimizing Your Health, Part 7: Getting Optimal Nutrition

Dear Readers,

Yes, twenty seconds — because that's about how long it takes to stir a scoop of high-dose vitamin powder and ribose into a glass of water or juice and drink it!

Taking a high-dose vitamin powder every day is what I call "nutritional insurance" — a way to make sure you're getting all the nutrients you need.

Food is your best source of nutrition, of course. But most of us eat a heavily processed modern diet, which doesn't deliver an optimal level of nutrients. Why not? Do the nutritional math:

18% of the calories in the modern diet are from sugar. Another 18% are from white flour. A good chunk of the rest is from added fats. In all, more than 50% of the calories in the modern diet are from empty calories, stripped of vitamins and minerals.

The good news is that there are plenty of easy (and delicious) ways to get the proper nutrition you need, which I talk about in the rest of this newsletter. And getting optimal nutrition promotes optimal health of every part of your body: your heart, brain, digestive tract, thyroid gland, joints, skin … well, you get the idea!

Want to Live Longer? Drink Coffee!

No, this isn't Starbucks' PR firm talking to you. It's the take-home message from a recent study conducted by researchers at the National Cancer Institute. They analyzed 13 years of health data from more than 400,000 people and found that people who drank 3 to 4 cups of coffee a day reduced their risk of early death by 12-13% compared to folks who didn't drink coffee. Looking at specific health problems, the researchers found coffee drinking was linked to fewer deaths from heart disease, respiratory disease, stroke, injuries and accidents, diabetes, and infections. Like tea, coffee is plant based and chock full of antioxidants. (I would keep it to 1-2 cups a day, and switch to decaf if having more.)

Deaf Wife

Herb feared his wife, Eunice, wasn't hearing as well as she used to, and he thought she might need a hearing aid. Not quite sure how to approach her, he called the family doctor to discuss the problem.

The doctor told him about a simple informal test the husband could perform that would give the doctor a better idea about her hearing loss.

''Here's what you do," he explained, "Stand about 40 feet away from her, and in a normal conversational speaking tone see if she hears you. If not, go to 30 feet, then 20 feet, and so on until you get a response."

That evening, the wife was in the kitchen cooking dinner, and he was in the den. He whispers to himself, "I'm about 40 feet away, let's see what happens." Then in a normal tone he asks, "Honey, what's for dinner?"

No response.

Next he moves into the dining room where he's about 20 feet from his wife and asks, "Honey, what's for dinner?"

Again no response.

So he walks up to the kitchen door, about 10 feet away. "Honey, what's for dinner?"

Still no response.

So he walks right up behind her. "'Eunice, what's for dinner?"'

"For Pete's sake, Herb, for the fifth time, chicken!"
