Dr. T on The Ricki Lake Show

The Ricki Lake Show

Ricki Lake recently invited me to be a guest on her new talk show, The Ricki Lake Show. Her topic for the appearance was "How to Stop the Pain," and Ricki asked me to come on to share my S.H.I.N.E. protocol with her and her audience.

You may remember a recent newsletter I sent asking you to share your experiences with S.H.I.N.E., with the opportunity to appear with me on a popular national talk show. I couldn't divulge who it was at the time, but this is the show.

A Special Thank You to Everyone!

I received so many emails from you all and with such inspirational stories. It was such a wonderful reminder to everyone on our team that our efforts really do make a positive difference in so many people's lives. I want to thank all of you so much for your generous responses — this show truly is all about you!

The show will air a week from Monday, on October 22. To find out the exact time and channel to see it in your city, visit The Ricki Lake Show and click on "where to watch" in the upper right-hand corner of the page.

WHEN: Monday, October 22 (time depends on your city)

Seven Ways to Manage Menopause

Optimizing Your Health, Part 8: Menopause

Is it time for your 45,000-mile tune-up?

No, I'm not talking about your car. I'm talking about your body. And those 45,000 miles are 45 years — the four, five or more decades on your body's odometer.

That's about the time when most women start to experience the drop in estrogen, progesterone and other hormones that first triggers perimenopause (the length of the menstrual cycle start to change, and there are missed menses) and then menopause (12 months after your final period).

It's important to remember, however, that neither perimenopause nor menopause are diseases, any more than puberty is a disease. They are natural phases in the process of life.

Some women cruise through menopausal changes without a stall or breakdown. Other women find that they feel healthier and younger with a "tune-up" — and why not!

Your car gets a major tune-up when you've driven it 45,000 miles — and your body deserves one, too! The rest of this week's newsletter presents a 7-point "checklist" for your 45,000-mile tune-up: 7 ways to optimize your health during perimenopause and menopause.

Research Briefs

Soy Cools Hot Flashes

Researchers at the University of Delaware recently reviewed the results of 19 studies on soy and hot flashes, involving more than 1,200 women, and found that eating two servings a day of soy for just six weeks reduced the frequency of hot flashes by 21% and the severity of them by 26%. Eating soy for 12 weeks boosted those benefits three-fold.

"If you're 50 and you've never touched soy, it's not too late," said Melissa Melby, PhD, the study leader. "We've found that it still helps."

I recommend a handful of Edamame (soybean pods) as a delicious and healthy treat for those entering menopause.

Scientists "Discover" Brain Fog During Menopause

Many women in their 40s and 50s experience bouts of forgetfulness and "brain fog" (poor concentration). Too often, doctors dismiss those problems. Hey, catch up to the science, MDs. A new study proves they're real.

At Midlife, Women Need More Vitamin D

A European study of more than 3,000 women aged 45 to 68 found that many were deficient in vitamin D, with the average intake only 39% of the RDA.

Bottom line: Optimize vitamin D levels with a high-potency vitamin powder that contains at least 2,000 IU of vitamin D. And spend at least 10 to 15 minutes outdoors every day. Sunshine sparks the body's production of vitamin D.

Remember: Avoid sunburn, not sunshine!
