Q&A With Dr. T

Question: I've been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and I'm very tired all the time. Recent blood work revealed a ferritin level of 35. My doctor said this was normal, but I thought the level was supposed to be higher? Could you clarify please? I'm in my fifties and don't know whether to supplement with iron or not. Thank you for your books and blog. You're awesome!

Answer: If your ferritin level is under 60, I recommend iron supplementation to raise it to 60-100. "Normal" simply means that you're not in the lowest 2% of the population, but many studies show that levels under 60 suggest that your body needs more iron. For example, people with Restless Legs Syndrome improve with iron supplementation if their ferritin level is under 60. Iron levels below 40 are associated with infertility. And healthy hair growth optimally takes ferritin levels of about 100. Take the iron at bedtime. (If you're also taking thyroid hormone, make sure to take the two supplements at least several hours apart from each other.)
