Study Update

Hello Reader,

To borrow from Charles Dickens' famous opening line of his novel A Tale of Two Cities, last year was "the best of times and the worst of times ..."

But as bad as things were, last year brought numerous new reasons for hope. For instance, though COVID was challenging, it also resulted in a dramatic rise in research investment that stands to benefit those with CFS and fibromyalgia. Before COVID, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) invested a paltry $12 million per year in fibromyalgia research. But then persistent post-COVID symptoms began to emerge — the so-called "Long-Hauler Syndrome" that so closely mirrors the symptoms of CFS and fibromyalgia. And the NIH has decided to study this. In fact, it is committing $1.15 billion in research funding for this over the next four years, which is a 100-fold increase in research investment for an illness that is essentially CFS and fibromyalgia. So we finally are getting the attention we deserve!

Meanwhile, we're continuing to find and develop new resources to improve the lives of those dealing with persistent fatigue. To begin with, I've completed three studies of two effective new tools that can help you now, and will launch a fourth study soon.

Let's review the results so far.

Some COVID Long Haulers See Relief After Vaccination

About 1/3 of people with persistent Long hauler syndrome (aka, PASC) are seeing moderate to large levels of improvement after receiving vaccination for COVID. This was found in a poll of people with the syndrome at "Survivor Corps."

For those with pre-existing CFS and fibromyalgia, what I am seeing in my practice is that most people do not have a problem with the vaccine. But a small percent are having marked flaring of symptoms, while a still smaller percent are actually seeing what appears to be transient improvement of their CFS/FMS.

Over 70% of COVID Patients Develop One or More Persistent Symptoms

In a review of 45 studies with almost 10,000 people who recovered from COVID, over 70% continue to experience at least one symptom 60 days later, according to the results of a systematic review recently published in JAMA Network Open. Symptoms occurring most frequently included 40% with fatigue or exhaustion, and 36% with shortness of breath.

Under Strict Safety Measures, No One at Concert Caught COVID

Using N-95 masks but no social distancing or other precautions, people attending a concert had no greater risk of getting COVID than people who didn't wear a mask. One more piece of data making this summer a good time to go play (although I still recommend that when attending large gatherings, you should stick with outdoor events or places with good ventilation).
