Woman With Back Pain

Hello Reader,

This is part 10 in my "Fatigue & Fibromyalgia Are Optional" series. This week I'll describe the 10 key types of pain. Then, in my Brain Fog Friendly (BFF) Summary, I'll walk you through a number of options for natural pain relief.

The 10 Key Types of Pain

These are the ten most common kinds of pain. I would note that all of these can also be seen in fibromyalgia.

1. Myofascial (Muscle) Pain

A muscle is like a spring, in that it takes more energy for a muscle to relax than to contract. When muscles don’t have enough energy, as results when you have fibromyalgia, they can become locked in shortened position, forming tender knots.

Almost any kind of pain will throw the surrounding muscles into shortening as well. So muscle pain is critical to treat in all of the other kinds of pain conditions below. Myofascial pain is the primary initial source of pain in most people with fibromyalgia. Adding insult to injury, the presence of this chronic pain often leads to developing two other pains: central sensitization and small fiber neuropathic pain.

2. Pain From Inflammation

This is the second most common cause of pain, and most often reflects as arthritis and tendinitis. Along with muscle pain, it is the main cause of pain in autoimmune illness as well. Often, tendinitis simply occurs because of the chronic muscle shortening pulling on the tendons. For this, the solution is to also treat muscle shortening.

Estrogen Replacement May Reduce COVID-19 Death Risk

Estrogen

There's good news for women 50 to 80 years of age who are receiving estrogen replacement therapy. In a study of 14,685 women, those who were receiving the therapy were 50% less likely to die from COVID. Although association doesnt mean that the estrogen caused the lower death rate, it is one more piece of data suggesting that estrogen replacement (I only use bioidentical estrogen and progesterone) in women helps them to stay younger. And younger women have a lower risk of dying from COVID.

Live Longer With Coffee

Coffee

In a recent large 10-year study, drinking up to 3 cups of coffee a day was shown to be associated with a 14% lower risk of dying. So enjoy!

Q&A of the Week

Question: What is the recommended dose of CBD for rheumatoid arthritis?

Answer: I don’t use hemp oil or CBD for RA, but rather for the sleep, pain, or anxiety. It's important to use a good quality product, as many of them are junk (products at licensed marijuana dispensaries are more likely to be good quality). I recommend 50-150 mg 2-3x day for pain, or as much as 250 mg (five capsules) for sleep. Both doses are ok, but higher doses aren't likely to add much benefit, and prices are fairly high for good hemp oil.

Cornball But Funny

  1. What do Alexander the Great and Winnie the Pooh have in common? Same middle name.
  2. What is the opposite of a croissant? A happy uncle.
  3. If April showers bring May flowers, what do May flowers bring? Pilgrims.
  4. Which branch of the military accepts toddlers? The infantry.
  5. Though I enjoy the sport, I could never date a tennis player. Love means nothing to them.
  6. I have a joke about time travel, but I'm not gonna share it. You guys didn't like it.
