Prescription Medications

Hello Reader,

In last week's newsletter, I described the 10 key types of pain and the natural remedies that can be used to treat them. In this part 11 in my "Fatigue & Fibromyalgia Are Optional" series, I'll show my Brain Fog Friendly (BFF) Summary for the prescription medications that are sometimes necessary to use.

My preference is to use natural therapies for pain, but I will prescribe prescription medications when needed. And they can be very helpful. For the most part, natural therapies can be combined with prescriptions. Doing so can decrease the amount of medication needed, while increasing their effectiveness and decreasing side effects.

Note that I do not recommend using the ibuprofen (e.g., Advil or Motrin) family of medications (NSAIDs) for fibromyalgia, as they are minimally effective and can be dangerous, with studies showing they can increase the risk of heart disease.

Why Melatonin May Not Work for You

Difficulty Sleeping

Melatonin is a good natural sleep aid. But there are situations where it doesn't seem to help. This excellent article at Health Digest provides some reasons for this, along with other suggestions for getting sounder sleep, including even the many health benefits of sleeping in the buff ;-)

BTW, two of my favorite natural sleep aids are the Revitalizing Sleep Formula and Melatonin EP120™. The Sleep Formula is an awesome mix of valerian, hops, passion flower, 5-HTP, lemon balm and suntheanine that leaves most people sleeping like kittens. Even when major sleep help is needed, I begin with this plus the Melatonin EP120 sustained release. The sustained release can also help prevent middle of the night wakings.

Use a Sleep Mask for Deeper Sleep – and Even Weight Loss?

Sleep Mask

New research is showing something very surprising. If you sleep with a light on, even a light that's so dim that you can't read by it, it triggers your adrenaline (sympathetic nervous system) to stay stimulated during sleep. And one of the reasons for nonrestorative sleep in CFS and fibromyalgia is the nervous system being stuck in the high adrenaline mode during sleep.

Meanwhile, being stuck on adrenaline mode during sleep triggers what is called insulin resistance. Translated to English, it causes weight gain. So this may be just one more cause of the average 32 ½ pound weight gain seen in CFS and fibromyalgia.

This suggests that wearing a sleep mask to blackout ambient light during sleep can make your rest more restorative. And maybe even help shed a few pounds!
