Can an Egg a Day Keep Dementia Away?

Two components of eggs are essential for both memory and the health of our brain cells. These are choline and phosphatidylcholine (lecithin).
A recent April 2026 study sheds increasing light on why this is so.
A critical component of aging comes from damage to our mitochondrial energy furnaces. But what causes this and how can it be prevented? This new study found that the decreasing ability to make phosphatidylcholine as we age is a major contributor to this problem. Especially important? It is one that is easy to address.
Some context?
A 2024 study showed that eating over 2 eggs a week was associated with a 34% longer time to develop Alzheimer’s dementia compared to 1 egg or less per month. It also showed a 47% lower risk of developing Alzheimer's dementia in those who ate at least one egg a week. Higher egg intake levels showed the same protection. This 2024 Tufts university study looked at 1024 older adults (mean age 81 years) and followed them over an average of 6 years to see what the risk of developing Alzheimer’s dementia was in those with different egg intakes.
39% of the total effect of egg intake on incident Alzheimer's dementia was mediated through dietary choline.
Eggs are also a major source of phosphatidylcholine (lecithin). Which in a 2022 study was shown to have strong effects on a common form of brain inflammation called microglial activation. Which is likely a critical cause of the markedly increased risk of dementia in those with chronic pain.
Meanwhile, this adds to our understanding of the research showing that fish oil (DHA) and choline are considered synergistic rather than merely additive for lowering dementia risk. Together, they increase phosphatidyl choline and acetylcholine (the memory molecule) production, decrease a common form of brain inflammation, and protect the critical and fragile brain cell membranes and functions.
Can you imagine if a medication had the same effect?
This is just one more reason why eggs are a healthy food. Associated with a 47% lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s. Add some lox or fish to your diet and this effect increases. Although phosphatidylcholine supplements are not routinely recommended (because they can cause toxic byproducts), eggs do not seem to have this problem, nor do multivitamins that contain choline 100 milligrams daily. For those who don't like eggs or fish, it is reasonable to supplement.
Research shows that most cases of dementia are preventable. With measures that people can easily do on their own. But when it comes to dementia and Alzheimer's, an ounce of prevention is well worth a pound of cure. It is much easier to prevent than to reverse.
These same benefits also would be expected to improve brain fog. The Energy Revitalization Drink Mix and Vectomega give the same benefits.
