An observational study published at Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine looked at over 16,000 people to see if there existed an association between consumption of glucosamine/chondroitin and cardiovascular mortality. Approximately 4% of this group had regularly taken glucosamine and chondroitin for at least a year. Researchers found that these people were 39% less likely to die of any cause during the nine-year follow up, and were 65% less likely to die of heart attack or stroke.

Meanwhile, research shows that arthritis medications (called NSAIDs) kill over 50,000 Americans every year, are associated with a 35% increased risk of heart attack and stroke, and result in 4,000-16,500 bleeding ulcer deaths yearly. The new new study suggests that taking glucosamine/chondroitin instead of arthritis medications could result in 20,000-30,000 fewer annual U.S. deaths.

Think of it. Research suggests that simply starting with natural remedies instead of arthritis medications could be associated with 70,000 less U.S. deaths each year. With equal effectiveness. Just a little food for thought…
