I recently learned I have an irritable bladder. I'm wondering if this ever goes away, or will I always have this and also what causes it, since I developed it at the age of 48?
Answer
There are many causes of irritable bladder and many of them do go away. Sometimes, magnesium 200 --400 mg a day can help settle down muscle spasms in general, including bladder spasm, after several months of use. In addition, if there is tenderness where the muscle going down the front of the abdomen attaches to the top of the pelvic bone (the lowest bone in the middle of the abdomen/pelvis), this tight muscle can trigger bladder spasm. A hot compress or other treatments to relax that muscle can help bladder spasm as well. Of course, have your urologist look for other more common and well known causes as well, and they can offer treatments that can also help. Hope this is helpful.
