What medications would you recommend for long term sleep problems?

Have had sleep problems for 15 yrs now and developed FMS 10 yrs ago. I take gabapentin for fms symptoms but it does not help specifically for my sleep. I have been taking Clonazepam for 5 yrs but I do not think it is as effective as before as I wake 7-8 times each night. Is Ambien still the best medication you would recommend for sleep as I am waiting for your new book but need to see my doctor about desperately getting some better sleep before August.

Answer

Most often, a mix of melatonin 1/2 mg, and the Revitalizing Sleep Formula herbal mix 2 to 4 capsules at bedtime, Ambien 5 to 7.5 mg at bedtime , with the 2 1/2 mg left on a nightstand by the bed to be put under the tongue for middle of the night wakings, plus a mix of Neurontin 300 mg , trazodone 25 to 50 mg, and/or flexeril 3-5 mg as needed to get eight hours of solid sleep without hangover works for most. These can be mixed and matched as needed in the combination that works best for you.
