Is 500 mg of IV Magnesium Sulfate risky?
Does it pose any risk if my doctor gives an IV with Magnesium Sulfate of 500mg each week for 8 weeks? I don't get it why the pharmacy mentioned to me that it's a dangerous thing to do. I have had fibromyalgia for 2 years now and one symptom is fatigue and muscle spasm and twitching. Thanks for any advice you can give.
Answer
Unless you have kidney failure, and generally even then, this small dose is very safe. The magnesium is usually given at a higher dose 1000-2000 mg (1-2 gm) over an hour. Replacing the deficits of low magnesium can take over 24,000 mg. So I don't know why your pharmacist would say that. Ask them. I find giving 1000-2000 mg magnesium plus other nutrients in a liter of salt water (normal saline) to be very helpful in CFS and Fibro.
