Woman Drinking Coffee

I've often written about how medical myths persist, regardless of what the research shows. Well, here we go again…

The old myth being debunked this time? That coffee is bad for you. Yet here comes another study showing that drinking coffee is actually good for you — with the caveat that you keep it to three cups a day or less, as beyond that the benefits begin to decrease.

In a prospective study of over 172,000 people, drinking three cups of coffee a day was associated with a 40% lower risk of heart attack, diabetes or stroke (they lumped these together as cardiovascular disease, and adjusted the numbers to account for other risk factors). So what does the research say to me?

  1. Taking cholesterol lowering medications if you don't have a history of having had angina, bypass/stent, or a heart attack can lower your risk of heart attack death by about 2-5%..
  2. Eating just a little bit of chocolate each day is associated with a 45% lower risk.
  3. Drinking a few cups of coffee or tea each day? A 40% lower risk!

So which of these do most doctors recommend? Hint: the one that the pharmaceutical industry is force feeding them information on (I'd call it misinformation).

So, I'll Say It Again...

Bad for you: Food processing is unhealthy. Try to avoid this by aiming for foods that are closer to the way that nature made them.

Also bad for you: Sugar (especially recognizing that food processors dump 140 pounds per person per year into our food supply), margarine, and "food substitutes."

Actually good for you? Eggs, butter, coffee, tea, chocolate, and even salt are actually healthy for most people, especially those with CFS, fibromyalgia or long COVID.

A little common sense cannot only save your life. But make your life more worth living.
