What could be causing my chronic, smelly gas?

I have taken anti-gas supplements every time I eat for years to help prevent gas. I could not work or go anywhere because of the noise and smell. It is so bad sometime it makes my rectum sore. Is there anything to stop this?

Answer

If it has a foul smell (hydrogen sulfide) it is usually bacterial, as opposed to Candida, which does not have that marked odor. Ask your doctor to consider a trial of Rifaximin (a non absorbable antibiotic) and perhaps a test to look for SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth).
