Eating Fish Prevents Heart Attacks

In a study of 214 men and 79 women who had recently had a heart attack, long-term fish consumption was associated with a much lower risk of having another heart attack in the next 30 days. This was a major benefit as eating more than 7 portions of fish a week was associated with an 83% reduced risk of recurrent heart problems after hospitalization.

A new study of more than 29,000 people from 52 countries provides more evidence that exercise is good for the heart. It linked regular mild exercise to a 13% lower risk of having a heart attack, and regular moderate or strenuous exercise to a 24% lower risk.

Fish Oil Decreases Asthma Risk in Offspring

In a case-control study involving subjects from the Children's Health Study, researchers found: The risk of asthma in children born to mothers with a history of asthma who ate oily fish at least monthly to be 80% less than children whose mothers did not eat fish during pregnancy. However, children born to non-asthmatic mothers did not appear to benefit from the moms eating fish. On the other hand, the study found that for those moms that ate fish sticks during pregnancy—a source of unhealthy trans-fats—the risk of asthma in their children was doubled.

Fish Oil Lowers Risk of Macular Degeneration

A meta-analysis (review) looked at nine studies which enrolled a total of 88,974 people, including 3,203 cases of Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD). High dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil) was associated with a 38% reduction in the risk for late AMD. Eating fish at least twice weekly was associated with a 24% decreased risk for early AMD as well.

Veggies (High in Alpha Linolenic Acid) Decrease Heart Attack Risk

A study of 1,819 people with a first heart attack indicates that dietary intake of alpha-linolenic acid (found in vegetables) may be associated with a lower risk of heart attack. The study looked at levels of these vegetable fatty acids in fat tissue and and in the diet. Those whose level of these vegetable oils were in the highest 20% of the group had a 59% lower risk of heart attack than those in the lowest 20%.

Addressing Iron Deficiency May Improve Thyroid Function

In this study done in Pakistan, it was shown that women with goiter (thyroid enlargement) were more likely to have iron deficiency. They conclude: "It was observed that iron deficiency is prevalent in GFPs (goitrous female patients), so the need of iron supplementation will be required to improve the efficacy of thyroid metabolism in goitrous women." This conclusion is a bit of a stretch, but supports the need to check iron levels in CFS/FMS and hypothyroidism and to address with iron when low.

Low Iodine After Pregnancy, Hypothyroid for Life?

Researchers in Australia studied women six months after their pregnancy and found that those who had the lowest levels of iodine were four times more likely to have developed hypothyroidism two years later. The researchers followed some of the women for 12 years, and found iodine levels were an excellent predictor of who did and didn’t end up with long term hypothyroidism. Most of those with low levels did, while most of those with normal levels didn’t. Thyroid deficiency from low iodine may sometimes be reversed by simply taking iodine!
