Low Thyroid (Even if Tests Are Normal) Is a Major Cause of Heart Attacks

Published: October 22, 2012

In earlier newsletters, we talked about how missing an underactive thyroid by relying on blood testing is a major cause of totally preventable miscarriages (over 50,000 a year in the US alone). It is also a major cause of unexplained infertility (see "Addressing Infertility Naturally"), unexplained fatigue, fibromyalgia, chronic pain and a host of other problems. A new landmark study showed that women whose thyroid blood tests showed thyroid function to be in the lower third of the normal range vs. the upper third (i.e., TSH was in the upper third vs. the lower third) of the normal range (which doctors would say is "just fine") were 69% more likely to die from a heart attack.

High Salt Intake Is Associated with BETTER Health

This study is a fascinating one. It is based on the NHANES data base, which is one of the most respected (if not the most respected) nutritional data bases in the country. What the study showed is the opposite of what we have been lead to believe medically. It showed that the lower the salt intake, the HIGHER the risk of death. Put differently, our advice to people to avoid salt is more likely to be harmful than helpful!

Flavonoids are a type of natural compound found in many of the plant foods that we eat, including grapes, apples, green and black tea, and cocoa — plus cocoa-containing food products such as dark chocolate. The benefits of consuming flavanoids have captured the attention of researchers in recent years. Known benefits include a reduction in platelet aggregation and improvements in insulin sensitivity and blood pressure. In addition, a particular variety of flavanoid found in cocoa — the "cocoa flavanol (CF)" — has been found to increase cerebral blood flow and brain activity.

Low Vitamin D and Obesity

Published: October 21, 2012

In a study of 217 obese children ages 7-18 years, vitamin D deficiency was associated with increased weight and blood pressure, and a lower "Good Cholesterol (HDL)." Over half (55.2%) of all children were found to be vitamin D deficient (defined as 25-OH-D < 20 ng/ml) which, given the importance of vitamin D, is frightening. Vitamin D deficient children were much more likely to be both obese and insulin resistant. This is important because insulin resistance causes weight gain (as well as causing diabetes).

The mineral potassium is a must for regulating pH, the acid-alkaline balance of the body’s chemistry. It’s also crucial for the health of your muscles, nerves, heart, kidney, and adrenal glands. Potassium is found mostly in vegetables and fruit, and the government's Recommended Daily Value is 3,000 mg. But most Americans get only about 2,000. According to a new study, that may be one reason why 800,000 Americans a year have strokes.
