Amino Acids Low in Fibromyalgia

In this study, researchers measured the level of 20 amino acids (critical components of proteins). They found that overall levels of amino acids were lower in fibromyalgia and that seven amino acids were especially low, including taurine, alanine, tyrosine, valine, methionine, phenylalanine, and threonine. The pattern of amino acid deficiency was especially suggestive of a problem with the sympathetic (adrenaline) nervous system, which tends to be overactive and then exhausts in patients with CFS and fibromyalgia. Amino acids are critical for many functions, especially the production of key brain chemicals called neurotransmitters. I recommend supplementation with all of the amino acids as opposed to using a single one by itself, as these supplies overall nutritional support and are less likely to cause a relative deficiency of other amino acids.

Amino Acids Levels May Be Lower in Fibromyalgia Patients

A new study examined the possible relationship between plasma amino acid levels and fibromyalgia. In this study, 20 amino acids were measured in the plasma in 34 fibromyalgia patients and 18 healthy control subjects. The study showed that patients with fibromyalgia had significantly lower levels of several amino acids, including taurine, alanine, tyrosine, valine, methionine, phenylalanine, and threonine. Additionally, the sum of essential amino acids, which are amino acids required in the diet, was also significantly lower in the fibromyalgia patients. The study also showed that tyrosine competing amino acids (CAA), which are amino acids that compete for the same cerebral uptake mechanism, were lower in patients with fibromyalgia." This study suggests that there may be deficient absorption of certain amino acids from the gastrointestinal tract in patients with fibromyalgia.

A Rand study by researchers at the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine suggests that the high rates of CFS in Persian Gulf War Veterans (called "Gulf War Syndrome") can be partially explained by exposure to chemicals such as pesticides and nerve agents. Veterans from the 1990-91 conflict have a higher rate of CFS-like symptoms than either non-deployed personnel or those deployed elsewhere.

Those operated on for breast cancer have a 10% higher risk of developing fibromyalgia than other women, a new study shows. In my experience, it seems that the estrogen-blocker Tamoxifen - often given after breast surgery - can trigger FMS.

In this study, 30 women with fibromyalgia were compared to 30 women without fibro. Tasks requiring attention were impaired as was the "working memory," and the cognitive dysfunction ("brain fog") worsened as the testing got harder. The authors conclude, "These findings point to disrupted working memory as a specific mechanism that is disrupted." Basically, short-term memory is problematic and gets worse with stress.
