To examine blood pressure circadian rhythm in subjects with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and appropriate normal and fatigued controls to correlate parameters of blood pressure regulation with perception of fatigue in an observational cohort study. The cause of CFS remains unknown and there are no effective therapies.

Intravenous Lidocaine for Fibromyalgia Pain

Here is another new study showing that IV lidocaine is effective and safe in addressing fibromyalgia. Studies in the past have shown that a series of these IVs can be helpful for fibro pain and nerve pain, and it is even recommended in the prestigious Cochrane Reviews. This new study showed that giving the IV lidocaine daily for 5 days helped decrease pain even 1 month after the infusions. I find this works best in those with severe pain, and I often will recommend it in those with severe and persistent pain.

Levels of Lipid Peroxidation, Nitric Oxide, and Antioxidant Vitamins in Plasma of Patients with Fibromyalgia

Published: July 16, 2012

The etiology of fibromyalgia is not clearly understood. In recent years, a few studies have investigated the possible role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the etiology and pathogenesis of fibromyalgia. The aim of this study was to investigate plasma antioxidant vitamins, lipid peroxidation (LP), and nitric oxide (NO) levels in patients with fibromyalgia and controls. The study was performed on the blood plasma of 30 female patients and 30 age-matched controls. After a fast of 12 h, blood samples were taken, and plasma samples were obtained for measurement of vitamins A, C, E, and beta-carotene concentrations and levels of LP and NO. Concentrations of vitamins A (p < 0.01) and E (p < 0.001) were significantly lower in patients with fibromyalgia than in controls, and LP levels were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in the plasma of the patients than in controls. Concentrations of vitamin C and beta-carotene and levels of NO did not change significantly. These results provide some evidence for a potential role of LP and fat-soluble antioxidants in the patients with fibromyalgia.

Eliminating Fibromyalgia Pain

We often address pain as if it is the main problem, like hypertension or diabetes, and forget that it is often simply an important indicator of other problems that need to be taken care of. In fact, pain can be viewed as the red, flashing, warning light on your dashboard telling you that something urgently needs attention.

Update on Using HCG to Address Pain

Published: July 14, 2012

Below is an email exchange between myself and Dr. Forrest Tennant, who has been researching the use of HCG for chronic pain, in which he answers several questions I had about the therapy. He is continuing to find it very helpful and feels it should be offered to all patients with "central pain" - the central sensitization that is a part of fibromyalgia.

HCG: A Therapy for Post-Pregnancy CFS/FMS?

Published: July 14, 2012

HCG is a hormone, made by the placenta, that sustains pregnancy and moderates immune function - so that the mother's immune system does not reject the fetus. A significant number of women have had their CFS/FMS triggered after they delivered a baby. Even more find their CFS/FMS improves during pregnancy, only to come back with a vengeance after the baby is born. I had attributed this phenomenon to the rise in the hormone CRH (an adrenal-stimulating hormone) and the 30% rise in blood volume that occurs during pregnancy. It is possible, though, that the dramatic drop in HCG when the baby is born also plays a role.

Earthing: A Cool New Book

Published: July 14, 2012

When was the last time your bare feet touched the earth? With the soles of shoes being made of insulating materials, cities being covered in asphalt, and most of our homes offering little or no contact with the ground, you may find that it's been a while. This is especially so for people who live in big cities. For most of human existence, we lived in intimate contact with the earth and soil. People walked barefoot or with leather soled shoes. They also slept in contact with the ground. This is no longer the case. In this interesting new book by Dr. Stephen Sinatra and Martin Zucker, two colleagues that I have great respect for, they team up with Clinton Ober who developed the concept called "Earthing." It is a remarkably simple and common-sense idea, and has been supported by a number of studies done by Mr. Ober.
