Published: July 14, 2012

On Thursday’s show (12/3), Dr. Oz did a great job introducing the new research showing the presence of XMRV viral infections in CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome). As the earlier show I appeared on focused on general fatigue, I have been encouraging Dr. Oz to do a segment focusing on CFS, and on XMRV in particular, and I think he did an excellent and compassionate job!

Although the research findings are mixed, I have found a history of abuse to be common in my CFS/FMS patients. In one study, exposure to childhood trauma was associated with a 6-fold increased risk of CFS and this was associated with the stress hormone changes seen in CFS (see abstract below). And as many as 70% have suffered physical or emotional abuse-as opposed to 15% of healthy people and 45% of those with other rheumatologic problems.

The Genetic Component of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

In the past, our clinical experience is that about half of our CFS and fibromyalgia patients have a family member that also has the illness. This was shown to be the case in a recent study looking at this question. It seems fitting to me that this study should come out of Salt Lake City, which is a center of the Latter Day Saints (LDS/Mormon) community - which excels in the study of genealogy. In this study, a computerized genealogical resource linking as many as 15 generations of genealogy data with medical diagnosis data in a large Utah health care system was used. Comparing this to the expected rate of CFS, the researchers estimated the relative risk of developing CFS in first, second and third degree relatives of CFS cases.

Brain Fog in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia

Published: July 13, 2012

Brain fog is a classic part of CFS and fibromyalgia, presenting as: Difficulty with word finding (e.g., remembering someone's name), word substitution (e.g., calling your husband by the wrong name!), and loss of short-term memory. It can be very severe and even frightening, leaving people with CFS concerned that they are developing Alzheimer's. But they're not. CFS brain fog is when you keep forgetting where you left the keys - Alzheimer's is when you forget how to use the keys!

Autonomic Dysfunction in Fibromyalgia

This study suggests that autonomic dysfunction, especially as it relates to overdrive of our adrenaline or sympathetic nervous system, is an integral part of the fibromyalgia. As discussed in our writings over the last several decades, autonomic dysfunction is a routine part of CFS and fibromyalgia. The autonomic nervous system is controlled by the hypothalamic "circuit breaker" that is malfunctioning in these illnesses (because of the energy crisis), so this study comes as no surprise.

With a recent study suggesting that two-thirds of people with chronic fatigue syndrome may test positive for a retrovirus called XMRV, a critical question arises. If this infection is indeed playing an important role in causing CFS symptoms, what can we do about it?
