XMRV Update, Plus — a Possible New Therapy

A new study is out this week in the Journal of Virology, done by researchers I respect from the University of Utah, Fatigue Consultation Clinic, and ARUP Laboratories. The study was well done and did not find XMRV present in CFS patients. This important study looked at 100 CFS patients and 200 controls. In addition, 14 patients who had positive tests for XMRV at WPI, including two in the original WPI study, also tested negative for XMRV in this study.

How Often Are Spastic Colon and CFS Really Celiac Disease (Wheat Allergy)?

Published: July 23, 2012

Spastic colon and irritable bowel syndrome are extraordinarily common in the United States and even more so in people with CFS and fibromyalgia. One of many causes of spastic colon would be wheat and other food allergies. Infections that are hard to diagnose on standard testing are another major cause. Celiac disease can be viewed as a very severe wheat allergy caused by a mix of autoimmune problems in genetically susceptible individuals. It is present in approximately 1% or less of the population. When present though, it is important to make the diagnosis, as strictly avoiding wheat and gluten can result in dramatic improvement (including in the symptoms of CFS). The diagnosis can be made with a simple blood test.

Is CFS Caused by Allergic Reactions to Infections?

Published: July 23, 2012

In an interesting article, Dr. Sarah Myhill (one of my favorite CFS researchers) theorizes that it may not be the bacterial or viral infections themselves causing CFS, but rather an allergic reaction to those infections. This is common in illness. For example, rheumatic fever and rheumatoid arthritis are not caused by the associated infections (which are trivial in those conditions) but rather by the body's excessive response to those infections.

Special Report: Small Heart Size Common in CFS

A few weeks ago I discussed a condition called POTS/NMH (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome/Neurally Mediated Hypotension), pointing out that most people with POTS/NMH also have CFS. Well, a new study by Japanese researchers, published in the medical journal Clinical Cardiology, has found that CFS patients with POTS/NMH have smaller-sized hearts than CFS patients who don't have POTS/NMH. In fact, the researchers found that just about anyone with POTS has a smaller heart than a person without it.
