Carnitine Helps Energy, Depression, and Sleep in Cancer Patients

Published: August 11, 2012

In this study of 27 patients with advanced cancer, carnitine was given beginning with a dose of 500 mg a day and increasing over a week to 3,000 mg a day. By the end of 1 week, fatigue and sleep improved and depression decreased. In other studies, nerve pain caused by chemotherapy also improved with acetyl L-carnitine. There were no significant side effects (though only 21 of the 27 patients finished the study).

Acetyl L-Carnitine for CFS and Fibromyalgia

Low levels of the carnitine compound acylcarnitine in the blood or muscles of people with CFIDS/FMS have been found by two different research centers. Carnitine plays many roles in the body. It has the critical function of preventing the mitochondria from being shut down when the system backs up. It does this by keeping a substance called acetyl coenzyme A from building up and shutting down the TCA cycle and the electron transport system, the cell's effective energy burning systems. Also, without sufficient carnitine, the body cannot burn fat (and, in fact, makes excess fat), resulting in large weight gains.

Virus R' Us? Addressing Viral Infections in CFS/FMS

I've spent 35 years watching "The Infection of the Month" show in CFS and fibromyalgia, where dozens (if not hundreds) of infections have been implicated as "The Cause" of CFS/FMS. During this time, I've seen people recover just fine in most cases without having to chase every infection. This experience with thousands — and at this point tens of thousands — of people with CFS/FMS has lead me repeatedly to a simple conclusion.

Beating Back Bacteria in CFS and Fibromyalgia

In a recent newsletter, I discussed NAET as a possible way to address infections in CFS and fibromyalgia. In the past, I've also pointed out that the common viruses viruses are common culprits, and reactivated when CFS/FMS weakened the immune system. Well, what's true of viruses is also true of bacteria and other antibiotic sensitive infections. Rare and unusual bacteria don't typically cause CFS/FMS. Rather, the weakened immune system of CFS/FMS allows a reactivation of symptom-causing infections such as mycoplasma and C. pneumoniae — infections that would otherwise be rapidly eliminated by a healthy immune system. How can you and your doctor figure out if hidden bacterial infections are part of the picture of your CFS/FMS?

Clearing Up Candida

This article continues our discussion of "What's New in the S.H.I.N.E. protocol" by moving on to "Infection" — the "I" in "S.H.I.N.E." People with CFS or fibromyalgia usually have many different and even unusual infections. But in most cases the infections aren't always the primary cause of the CFS/FMS. Instead, they may be the result of the immune dysfunction that makes those with CFS/FMS more susceptible to infections.

70% of men with CFS or fibromyalgia have testosterone levels in the lowest 30% of what's considered the normal range, and many 30 year olds have levels lower than most 80 year old men! For men trying to recover from CFS/FMS, bringing testosterone levels back to optimal is usually critical (more on this towards the end of the article). But what about men without CFS/FMS? Is menopause only for women? The answer is NO!

Bioidentical Hormone Replacement

In previous articles I discussed the hormone-generating adrenal and thyroid glands. In this article I focus on a hormone issue specific to women. A woman's ovaries produce two key hormones in the body: estrogen and progesterone. But as women age, their ovaries' ability to produce these hormones begins to drop - with unwanted consequences. Fortunately, this problem can be addressed through bioidentical hormone therapy.

Dizziness in CFS: What You Need to Know About NMH, POTS, and Adrenal Issues

Welcome to part 5 of my series reviewing and updating the core elements of the SHINE protocol for CFS and fibromyalgia. In the first 4 parts of this series, I focused on Sleep — the "S" in SHINE. This week I begin my discussion on Hormones — the "H" in SHINE. And in particular, adrenal hormones. Adrenal glands sit like caps on top of your kidneys. The middle part of the gland makes adrenaline, while the outer part makes cortisol, DHEA-S, aldosterone, estrogen and testosterone. About two-thirds of chronic fatigue patients appear to have underactive adrenal function.
