XMRV Update

Published: August 10, 2012

Though research continues to show mixed findings, several more studies have shown positive for XMRV in CFS, including two in Europe (Spain and Norway). This suggests that the key is proper testing technology. This continues to help increase awareness and acceptance of CFS. Though current therapies can be very helpful, there is always room for improvement, and we continue to explore new therapies that are promising. The push now is to research different antiviral therapies and combinations in people with CFS.

The XMRV Debate Heats Up

Though the authors of the WPI cytokine study (see Immune Abnormalities in CFS — Two New Studies) infer that this confirms XMRV in CFS, I do not believe this is the case. It simply shows that in a CFS patient whose illness began with an acute viral infection, you will see a characteristic pattern in their immune lab tests. What I think the new WPI study does very well is to offer a promising new test for people whose CFS began with an infection. For those who are working with family members or insurance companies that still don't believe their illness is real, this testing may be very worthwhile when it becomes available.

Vitamin C for Fatigue

Korean researchers studied 141 healthy office workers aged 20 to 49 who didn't have any diseases - but who were fatigued. Addressing them with IV vitamin C helped restore their energy. The researchers divided the workers into two groups. One group received an intravenous therapy of 10 grams of vitamin C and the other didn't. Two hours later, the folks getting C felt a lot more energetic, and they also were less fatigued the next day. The non-C group didn't notice any difference. The people who got the most benefit from vitamin C were those who had the lowest blood levels of vitamin C before the therapy.

Vitamin E Low in CFS

Vitamin E levels (serum alpha-tocopherol concentrations) were measured in 50 patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and 40 control subjects (Controls). Those with CFS had significantly lower vitamin E levels than those without CFS. The authors conclude "CFS [patients] had significantly lower alpha-tocopherol concentrations irrespective of coronary risk factors than Controls, suggesting the presence of increased oxidative stress in CFS."

Vision Problems in CFS and Fibromyalgia

Published: August 9, 2012

Vision problems are a common issue in both the general population and those with CFS/FMS. In CFS/FMS, it usually reflects as blurred vision caused by rapidly changing visual acuity (ability to focus). People often note that they get an eyeglass prescription, only to have it no longer be accurate by the time they get their glasses made. This occurs because the fluid in your eyes and the lens in your eye, and the strength of the muscles which allow the lens and pupils to focus can change minute to minute as your thyroid and adrenal (and associated blood sugar) levels fluctuate. In fact, some doctors use the inability of your pupil to stay consistently constricted when a light is shined on your eyes as a measure of adrenal weakness.
