Estrogen Deficiency Can Make You Fat

A woman's brain uses estrogen to balance food intake with energy output - and to tell fat where to go. That's why women not only gain weight after menopause, but also why the weight they gain goes to the wrong places, suggest Deborah J. Clegg, PhD, and colleagues at the University of Cincinnati. Clegg and colleagues used female rats, silencing estrogen receptors from a specific part of the brain that controls food intake, energy expenditure and fat distribution.

Facing Death Increases Happiness

Here's one for the annals of counterintuitive findings: When asked to contemplate the occasion of their own demise, people become happier than usual, instead of sadder, according to a new study in the November issue of Psychological Science. Researchers say it's a kind of psychological immune response - faced with thoughts of our own death, our brains automatically cope with the conscious feelings of distress by seeking out and triggering happy feelings, to protect us from permanent depression or paralyzing despair.

High dietary intake of tomato juice may lower LDL cholesterol and increase its resistance to oxidation. In a study involving 21 healthy subjects put on a high tomato diet, results indicate that increased dietary intake of tomato products may exert heart protective effects. The high tomato diet was associated with significant reductions in total cholesterol (5.9%) and LDL cholesterol (12.9%), compared with a low tomato diet. The reductions in total and LDL cholesterol were positively correlated with the increases in serum lycopene, beta-carotene, and gamma-carotene concentrations.

Artificial Food Colors and Additives Increase Hyperactivity in Children

Published: August 13, 2012
Categories:

In a double-blinded, placebo-controlled, crossover trial involving 297 children, eating artificial food colors and food additives was found to increase hyperactive behavior. Children were given a drink containing sodium benzoate and one of 2 artificial food color mixes or a placebo. Results found that compared with placebo, one mix significantly worsened hyperactivity compared with placebo for both the 3-year olds and the 8-year olds. The second mix was only found to have such an effect in the 8-year old children. These results suggest that consumption of foods containing artificial colors or sodium benzoate increases hyperactive behavior in children.
