If You Walk Outside, You Won't Fall Down

Or at least you'll be less likely to fall down. Because a walk in the sunshine boosts your body's level of vitamin D, and a new study (reviewing 79 previous studies on the topic) found that older folks with a daily intake of at least 1,000 IU of vitamin D had a 16% lower risk of falling. So getting sunshine not only lowers the risk of osteoporosis, it also makes you more steady on your feet! The right advice? Avoid sunburn, not sunshine.

In a recent study published in Circulation, women who ate at least three servings of blueberries or strawberries every week had a 34% lower risk of heart attack than women who ate them only rarely. That rate correlates with three times the effectiveness of statin medications in protecting your heart! So having a handful of berries with your breakfast cereal could be quite a 'hearty' way to start your day! (And don't forget to snack on an ounce of dark chocolate later in the day, and have a glass of red wine at dinner — two other delicious, heart-healthy treats!)

When Caring for a Sick Loved One, Be Selfish!

The media puts a lot of attention on the treatment of illnesses, but very little on those who do a lot of the treating - the healthy spouses (and other family members, like adult children and siblings) who take care of their sick loved ones. In my practice, it's not uncommon for me to see caregiver-spouses who literally had to become sick themselves to avoid burning out.

Fibromyalgia: Beat the Frustration, Battle the Pain

The cruel irony for frightened fibromyalgia patients is that they are told the results of all their medical tests are "normal".

Their physical pain, fatigue and depression are very real. But there is nothing for a physician to see in a laboratory report — no tell-tale spot on an X-ray, no elevated count in a blood workup.

Thus begins the frantic and frustrating search for relief for the 3 million to 5 million Americans suffering from this well documented but mysterious medical condition.

Anti-aging may be all the rage among aging Baby boomers and researchers, but you've got to split the difference between truth and fiction. Let's start here.

It's no wonder anti-aging is one of medicine's hot new areas of exploration. In 2011, not too far off the distance, one-third of the nation's population will start turning 65, according to the 2000 U.S. Census.
