Vitamin D for Optimal Health

Study after study shows that making sure your blood levels of vitamin D are optimized is a superb way to promote healthy function of different systems within your body. In this article I point out a number of these studies.

By the way, I don't recommend blood testing for vitamin D levels, because I don't consider the test reliable. What's protective? I recommend 2,000 IU of vitamin D a day. And take regular walks to get D-producing sunshine. The key to sun exposure: avoid sunburn, not sunshine.

This study looked at 185 people with hepatitis C (a viral infection of the liver) and found that a dramatic 57% of them also had fibromyalgia — and hepatitis C is getting so common that the CDC is considering recommending that all baby boomers be screened for it!

Optimizing Health Part 1: Brain Health

Conventional medicine usually takes the approach of preventing and treating disease — creating names and descriptions for thousands of different diseases, and then declaring "war" on them with drugs and surgeries (which often create a lot of "collateral damage," to use another war-related term). But the war on illness doesn't work. And as a result, year by year, Americans are getting sicker and sicker! There is a better way…

If You Walk Outside, You Won't Fall Down

Or at least you'll be less likely to fall down. Because a walk in the sunshine boosts your body's level of vitamin D, and a new study (reviewing 79 previous studies on the topic) found that older folks with a daily intake of at least 1,000 IU of vitamin D had a 16% lower risk of falling. So getting sunshine not only lowers the risk of osteoporosis, it also makes you more steady on your feet! The right advice? Avoid sunburn, not sunshine.

In a recent study published in Circulation, women who ate at least three servings of blueberries or strawberries every week had a 34% lower risk of heart attack than women who ate them only rarely. That rate correlates with three times the effectiveness of statin medications in protecting your heart! So having a handful of berries with your breakfast cereal could be quite a 'hearty' way to start your day! (And don't forget to snack on an ounce of dark chocolate later in the day, and have a glass of red wine at dinner — two other delicious, heart-healthy treats!)

When Caring for a Sick Loved One, Be Selfish!

The media puts a lot of attention on the treatment of illnesses, but very little on those who do a lot of the treating - the healthy spouses (and other family members, like adult children and siblings) who take care of their sick loved ones. In my practice, it's not uncommon for me to see caregiver-spouses who literally had to become sick themselves to avoid burning out.
