Encouraging News About Hormone Replacement Therapy for Women

Published: January 15, 2013

Researchers at the University of California studied more than 1,000 people with moderately high levels of LDL cholesterol, half of whom had taken a statin (20 mg of Zocor or 40 mg of Pravachol) for six months. Those using statins had lower levels of energy and/or more fatigue after exercise. And the women in the study suffered more of these side effects than the men.

Noting that many patients don't take their cholesterol-lowering statins because of side effects like muscle pain, a researcher from the Department of Medicine at Columbia University gave 18 people with high cholesterol an all-natural, cholesterol-lowering powdered shake (with almond, soy or low-fat milk) that contained 1,200 mg of red yeast rice and 1,250 mg of phytosterols.

Are you going into holiday season, but have the blues because you're looking at all this great food but worried about a high cholesterol level. Here is some great news for you!

A New Highly Effective Treatment for CRPS/Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy

Published: December 4, 2012

Although I have been unimpressed by the long-term effectiveness and safety of a family medications called biphosphonates for the treatment of osteoporosis, finding natural remedies to be dramatically more effective, and much safer and lower cost, here is a fascinating study suggesting that an intravenous biphosphonate available in Italy can be dramatically effective at treating a horrible pain condition called CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome – Previously Called Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy). At the end of one year, the patients were largely pain-free.

Tension Headaches

Published: October 29, 2012

Headaches are a major source of chronic pain. Although most people get an occasional headache, as many as 45 million Americans get them on a regular basis. Tension headaches account for about three quarters of all headaches, tend to both start and fade away gradually, and are the result of muscle tightness. When coming from the neck muscles, they cause moderate pain on both sides of, and across, the forehead. Occasionally, tension headaches from the muscles at the base of the skull are felt on the back and top of the head, or behind the eyes. Because tension headaches are muscular, the same therapies we've discussed in the past that cause your muscles to relax will often eliminate the recurrence of these headaches for good!

Eat Less Salt - and Die?

Published: October 26, 2012

I'm being sarcastic, right? The official health wisdom — the wisdom everybody knows is right (because all the top health officials repeat it over and over again) — is that if you "restrict" the salt in your diet, you'll live longer. That's because (once again, according to those official pronouncements) your blood pressure will be lower, putting you at less risk for a heart attack or stroke, the #1 and #3 causes of death in the U.S. There's only one problem with that widespread "health wisdom," as I've been telling my patients and readers for many years. It's not true! And a recent article in the May 4, 2011 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association is the latest evidence to run counter to the medical (and mistaken) myth of "Low Salt Good, High Salt Bad."
