Take the "Purple Pill" - and Break a Hip

Published: October 11, 2012

Researchers studied nearly 80,000 postmenopausal women who took proton pump inhibitors ("PPI") for two years or more (PPI's are acid-blocking drugs for heartburn, like the "Purple Pill™" Nexium, Prilosec, or Prevacid). They found the women taking PPI were 36% more likely to suffer a hip fracture, compared to women who never took it. This means it was as likely to cause a hip fracture as prevent one! And the longer they took the drug, the worse it was for their bones.

Milk bacteria (e.g., acidophilus, Lactobacillus, etc.) are not the only healthy probiotics. New research using another major healthy bowel bacteria (called E. coli — but not the type that causes food poisoning) has found that it also helps spastic colon. I would note that this is a kind of bacteria that has also been used by Professor DeMeirleir in addressing chronic fatigue syndrome associated bowel bacteria overgrowth.

Antacid Medications (Proton Pump Inhibitors) Cause Leaky Gut Syndrome

Published: October 11, 2012

In a recent article, we talked about how Fibromyalgia is associated with "Leaky Gut Syndrome" where food is absorbed before it is completely digested. This can result in both food allergies and immune exhaustion. This new study shows that "Proton Pump Inhibitors" (e.g., Prilosec, Prevacid, and Nexium) can cause leaky gut within days of starting them. Fortunately, the leaky gut goes away within days of stopping them.

Low Levels of Stomach Acid Increase Odds of Food Poisoning

Published: October 11, 2012

A new study from Australia has revealed that inadequate levels of stomach acid increase the risk of getting food poisoning. Gastric acid plays a key role in killing infections. The study was conducted using a mouse model where healthy mice and mice with low stomach acid were exposed to four different infections. The findings revealed that significantly higher numbers of all infections survived in stomach acid deficient mice. The study also found that infected mice given antacids were more prone to infection due to the absence of the gastric acid.

Dark Chocolate Lowers Blood Pressure and Protects Your Heart

Published: October 11, 2012

In a placebo-controlled study in 45 overweight adults, eating either dark chocolate or a sugar-free cocoa drink was found to improve heart blood vessel function and lower blood pressure. Interestingly, improvements in endothelial function were significantly greater with the sugar-free cocoa drink as compared to the sugar-containing cocoa drink. Blood pressure dropped with dark chocolate (systolic: -3.2 mm Hg, diastolic: -1.4) and sugar-free cocoa (systolic: -2.1 mm Hg; diastolic: -1.3 mm Hg).

Soy Cools Hot Flashes

Published: October 10, 2012

Researchers at the University of Delaware recently reviewed the results of 19 studies on soy and hot flashes, involving more than 1,200 women, and found that eating two servings a day of soy for just six weeks reduced the frequency of hot flashes by 21% and the severity of them by 26%. Eating soy for 12 weeks boosted those benefits three-fold.

"If you're 50 and you've never touched soy, it's not too late," said Melissa Melby, PhD, the study leader. "We've found that it still helps."

Scientists "Discover" Brain Fog During Menopause

Published: October 10, 2012

Many women in their 40s and 50s experience bouts of forgetfulness and "brain fog" (poor concentration). Too often, doctors dismiss those problems. Hey, catch up to the science, MDs. A new study proves they're real.

Researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center and the University of Illinois at Chicago tested 75 women from age 40 to 60, and found many of the women had problems with "working memory" (the ability to take in new information and manipulate it, like figuring out a tip) and with concentration on a challenging task (like doing your taxes).

At Midlife, Women Need More Vitamin D

Published: October 10, 2012

A European study of more than 3,000 women aged 45 to 68 found that many were deficient in vitamin D, with the average intake only 39% of the RDA.

Bottom line: Optimize vitamin D levels with a high-potency vitamin powder that contains at least 2,000 IU of vitamin D. And spend at least 10 to 15 minutes outdoors every day. Sunshine sparks the body's production of vitamin D.

Remember: Avoid sunburn, not sunshine!
